A distal radius fracture is the most common type of broken wrist. It happens when the radius—the larger of the two bones in your forearm—breaks near the wrist joint. This injury often occurs when someone tries to catch themselves during a fall. 💥✋
Falls: Landing on an outstretched hand is the #1 cause. 🤸♂️
Weak Bones: In older adults, even a minor fall can cause a break if osteoporosis is present. 🦴📉
High Impact: Car accidents or sports injuries can cause more severe, “shattered” breaks. 🚗🏈
If you have broken your wrist, you will likely notice:
Immediate Pain: Sharp pain and tenderness when touching the wrist. 😫
Swelling & Bruising: The area may puff up and turn blue or purple quickly. 🟣
Deformity: The wrist may look crooked or bent in an odd way (sometimes called a “dinner fork” deformity). 🍴📐
Numbness: A tingling sensation in the fingers if the swelling is pressing on a nerve. ⚡
The goal of treatment is to get the bone back into the correct position and keep it there until it heals. 🛠️✨
1. Diagnosis 📸 We use digital X-rays to see exactly where the bone is broken and if it has shifted out of place.
2. Non-Surgical Treatment (Casting) 🧣 If the bone is in a good position, Dr. Mohan Krishna will apply a plaster cast or splint. You will wear this for several weeks until the bone knits back together.
3. Resetting the Bone (Reduction) 🤲 If the bone is crooked, the doctor will “set” or straighten it. This is often done under local anesthesia so you don’t feel pain during the procedure.
4. Surgical Treatment 🏥 In cases where the break is unstable or involves the joint, surgery may be needed. Dr. Mohan Krishna may use:
Plates and Screws: The most common way to hold the bone in perfect alignment. 🔩
Pins or External Fixators: Used for specific types of complex fractures.
Healing a broken wrist takes time and patience. Once the cast or plate is in place, Physical Therapy is the key to success. We will help you perform exercises to reduce stiffness and regain your grip strength.
