PERTHES DISEASE

Perthes Disease (Legg-Calvé-Perthes)🧒

Specialized Pediatric Care by Dr. A. Mohan Krishna

Perthes Disease is a rare condition in children that affects the hip. It happens when the blood supply to the “ball” of the hip joint (the femoral head) is temporarily interrupted. Without enough blood, the bone begins to die and can break easily or lose its round shape. 🩸📉

How Does It Progress?🔍

The body eventually restores the blood supply, but the process of “breaking down” and “rebuilding” the bone takes time—often several years. The goal of treatment is to make sure the bone heals in a nice, round shape so the hip works smoothly later in life. 🦴🔄

Who is Affected?⚠️

  • Age: Usually children between 4 and 10 years old. 🎂

  • Gender: It is five times more common in boys than girls. 👦

  • Activity: Often affects very active, athletic children. 🏃‍♂️💨

Common Symptoms🚩

Parents usually notice symptoms appearing gradually:

  • Limping: The most common first sign, which may worsen after sports. 🚶‍♂️

  • Pain: A dull ache in the hip, groin, or even the knee (referred pain). 😫

  • Stiffness: Difficulty moving the leg outward or rotating it. 🧱

  • Shortening: In some cases, the affected leg may appear slightly shorter. 📏

How Dr. A. Mohan Krishna Helps Your Child🩺

Our focus is on “containment”—keeping the head of the thighbone inside the socket while it heals.

1. Expert Diagnosis 📸 We use X-rays and sometimes MRI scans to see which stage of the disease the bone is in. Early diagnosis is key to a better outcome!

2. Non-Surgical Treatment 💊 For younger children or milder cases:

  • Activity Restriction: Avoiding high-impact activities like jumping or running. 🛑

  • Physical Therapy: Specific exercises to keep the hip joint moving. 🤸‍♂️

  • Bracing or Casting: Special “Petrie casts” that keep the legs spread apart to keep the ball centered in the socket. 🧣

3. Surgical Solutions 🏥 If the hip is at risk of becoming deformed, Dr. Mohan Krishna may perform surgery to re-align the bones (Osteotomy). This ensures the “ball” stays deep inside the “socket” as the new bone grows back. 🛠️✨
