SHOULDER DISLOCATION

Shoulder Dislocation: Understanding Your Injury🦴

Expert Solutions by Dr. A. Mohan Krishna

Your shoulder is the most mobile joint in your body, which also makes it the most likely to “pop out” of place. A dislocated shoulder occurs when the head of your upper arm bone (the ball) is forced out of its socket. 💥

What Happens?🔍

A dislocation can be partial (the bone is halfway out) or complete (totally out of the socket). Because it takes great force to pull the shoulder apart, it often causes damage to the surrounding ligaments, tendons, and nerves. 📉

Common Symptoms⚠️

If you have dislocated your shoulder, you will likely experience:

  • Obvious Deformity: The shoulder looks “squared off” or has a visible bulge. 📐

  • Intense Pain: Severe pain that worsens if you try to move your arm. 😫

  • Swelling & Bruising: Rapid puffiness and discoloration around the joint. 🟣

  • Numbness: A “pins and needles” feeling or weakness in the arm and hand. ⚡

Why Did It Happen

Most dislocations are caused by sudden trauma, such as:

  • Falls: Landing on an outstretched hand. 🤸‍♂️

  • Sports Injuries: High-impact contact in sports like football or hockey. 🏈

  • Accidents: Direct hits to the shoulder during a car crash. 🚗

How Dr. A. Mohan Krishna Treats a Dislocation🩺

1. Physical Examination & X-ray 📸 We first confirm the dislocation and check for any broken bones or nerve damage using digital X-rays.

2. Closed Reduction (Putting it back) 🤲 Dr. Mohan Krishna will gently move the arm bone back into the socket. Once the joint is back in place, severe pain usually improves almost instantly! Note: This should only be done by a medical professional.

3. Immobilization 🧣 To allow the tissues to heal, you will wear a special sling for several weeks to keep the shoulder still.

4. Rehabilitation 🏋️‍♂️ Once the pain subsides, we start a customized exercise program to strengthen the muscles and prevent the shoulder from popping out again.

When is Surgery Needed?🛠️

If your shoulder keeps popping out repeatedly (Chronic Instability) or if the ligaments are severely torn, Dr. Mohan Krishna may recommend minimally invasive surgery to tighten the joint and restore stability. 🏥✨

Don’t let a shoulder injury limit your life! 🏃‍♂️
