Expert Care for Active Teens by Dr. A. Mohan Krishna
Is your teenager complaining of a dull ache behind or around the kneecap? This is very common! Known as Anterior Knee Pain, it usually isn’t caused by a single injury but rather by overuse or slight imbalances as the body grows. ๐โโ๏ธ๐จ
The kneecap (patella) sits in a groove at the end of the thighbone. When the knee bends or straightens, the kneecap slides up and down. If it doesn’t slide perfectly in that groove, it can cause irritation and pain. ๐ ๏ธ๐ฉน
The pain usually starts gradually and may include:
Dull Ache: A “toothache” like pain deep behind the kneecap. ๐ซ
Pain During Activity: Hurting while running, jumping, or climbing stairs. ๐
The “Movie Theater” Sign: Pain or stiffness after sitting for a long time with knees bent. ๐ฌ๐ช
Popping or Grinding: Hearing a “click” when straightening the leg or walking up stairs. โก
It is often seen in active teenagers (especially girls) due to:
Muscle Imbalance: Weakness in the hips or thighs (quadriceps). ๐
Flexibility Issues: Tight hamstrings or calf muscles. ๐งฑ
Growth Spurts: Bones growing faster than muscles and tendons. ๐
Overuse: Suddenly increasing the intensity of sports or training. ๐
The good news is that most teens recover fully with simple, non-surgical steps! โ
1. Expert Diagnosis ๐ธ Dr. Mohan Krishna will check the alignment of the leg and the strength of the hip and thigh muscles. We may use X-rays to ensure the kneecap is sitting correctly in its groove.
2. The Recovery Plan (Non-Surgical) ๐
Activity Modification: Reducing high-impact sports until the pain settles. ๐
Physical Therapy: This is the “gold standard.” Exercises to strengthen the hips and thighs are key to keeping the kneecap on track. ๐๏ธโโ๏ธ
Stretching: Focusing on the hamstrings and calves to take pressure off the knee. ๐งโโ๏ธ
Ice & Medication: Using ice packs and anti-inflammatories for occasional flare-ups. ๐ง
Proper Footwear: Using supportive shoes or orthotics if the teen has flat feet. ๐
Surgery is very rarely needed for adolescent anterior knee pain. It is only considered if the pain is severe and does not improve after many months of dedicated physical therapy. ๐ฅ
